Atelierhaus Hilmsen Residency

Every year Atelierhaus Hilmsen hosts residents in any of the following fields:

We are proud to have a diverse group of artists and professionals during each session at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.  Applicants must demonstrate accomplishment in their disciplines depending on their age and experience.  Interested applicants should be comfortable working in a close knit, intimate environment and motivated to work independently.  Many of our resident’s work is influenced by their time at Atelierhaus Hilmsen for years after they visit.  Applicants may apply year round.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Applicant’s name

  • Nationality

  • Date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format

  • Native language

  • Discipline

  • Current position or title

  • Accompanying spouse or collaborator (if applicable)

  • Website

WORK SAMPLES:

  • 3-5 samples of the applicant’s work that has been published, performed, exhibited, or otherwise publicly displayed during the last 5 years.  For group/collaborative projects please include all applicants information in separate applications.

PROJECT PROPOSAL:

  • A one-page description of the project that the applicant will pursue during their stay at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.

CURRICULUM VITAE:

  • A curriculum vitae, up to three pages in length.

LETTERS OF REFERENCE:

  • Include 3 letters of recommendation.

ROOM | BOARD | AMENITIES

Residents who are not accompanied by spouses or partners must be prepared to share living quarters and studio space with other residents.  Living spaces and studios are equipped with WIFI.  The house features 2 washers and dryers, a fully-equipped kitchen, a tea kitchen upstairs and several bathrooms with showers (bedding, towels, toilet paper and a hairdryer are available).

Bicycles are available to residents and they are encouraged to explore the area.  Atelierhaus Hilmsen is biking distance from several scenic and historic medieval towns.  Residents can also bike to a grocery store, pastry shop, ice cream parlor, hardware store, post office and public swimming pool.  There is also a residency van available for weekly trips to the larger grocery store, hardware stores and bank in nearby Salzwedel.

SPOUSES | PARTNERS | COLLABORATORS

Our residents may be accompanied by their spouses/partners during their stay at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.    Spouses/partners who intend to pursue a project in one of the disciplines and wish to be listed as Atelierhaus Hilmsen Residents must submit separate applications.  Although we accept collaborative projects, collaborative applicants must submit separate applications and be prepared to share living quarters and/or studio space at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.  Spouses/partners will be charged a daily fee of $25.00 USD to help defray the cost of housing.

COST

There is a cost to participate in the Atelierhaus Hilmsen residency.  Your payment is to be paid to our non profit, Houston-based umbrella organization, Art Netzwerk.  Many artists who apply find individual sponsors, create crowdsourcing campaigns, or apply for grants to assist with the cost of the residency and travel expenses.  For more information, please email us at artnetzwerk@gmail.com with the subject line: COST OF RESIDENCY.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The cost of transportation to and from Atelierhaus Hilmsen is the responsibility of the residents and their accompanying spouses/partners.  Other financial costs which are paid by the residents include: project materials, food and drink, any personal expenses incurred during the residency session and medical expenses.  Residents are advised to carry international travelers insurance in case of emergency.

Residents are advised to ship purchased supplies from a German company to the residency. Custom fees can be high if supplies are shipped from locations outside of Germany. Links to some art supply stores are listed below. Please review the terms and conditions for each merchant before purchasing.

CURRENCY + BANKS

Residents should exchange a portion of their currency to Euro (€) before leaving home or at the airport when they arrive in Germany.  While some of the stores in the area do accept debit/credit cards many only accept Euro.  There are ATM machines in Salzwedel which accept debit/credit cards and allow withdrawal of cash.  Residents must inform their banks of their travel plans in order to use ATM machines while traveling.

RESTRICTIONS

  • Children cannot be accommodated at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.

  • Overnight visits by friends, colleagues or family members are not possible.  There are several inns in Salzwedel (12 miles from Atelierhaus Hilmsen) for visitors.  Accompanying spouses/partners must be approved in the application process to be accommodated at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.

  • Pets are not allowed.

  • Those with food allergies or other dietary restrictions should contact us at artnetzwerk@gmail.com before submitting an application.

  • Those who have problems walking up and down stairs or steep inclines should contact us at artnetzwerk@gmail.com before submitting an application.

  • Residents must be able to speak conversational English to communicate in this international community, where the common language is typically English.

  • Drugs are not permitted at Atelierhaus Hilmsen.

  • Smoking is allowed in designated areas.  Drinking, while allowed, is not permitted in excess.

  • Respect the studio and personal space of the facilitators as well as the other residents.
